Key Messages
- A gradual warming trend will start today and continue through the upcoming week.
- Increasing chances for precipitation Sunday into early next week, along with cooler temperatures.
Short Term
(Today and tonight) Issued at 100 AM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026
Upper level ridge continues across the Southern Plains, while the surface ridge remains off to the east. South to southeast return flow from the Gulf has started, although low level moisture will return only slowly. May see some brief low clouds this morning across the I-10 corridor, but these should break up fairly quickly and leave mostly sunny skies once again. As expected yesterday, NBM blends were a little fast with the warm up and it may be a degree or two too warm for this afternoon as well. Will drop highs down again just slightly.
Long Term
(Wednesday night through next Tuesday) Issued at 1128 PM CDT Mon Oct 19 2026
An upper level ridge will build over the plains by mid to late week, in advance of an upper level trough along the west coast. The ridge will bring above normal temperatures to West Central Texas during the day, with highs mainly in the low to mid 80s Wednesday through Friday, while overnight lows will be mainly in the 50s.
The upper ridge will shift eastward Friday night into the weekend, as the upper storm system to the west pushes east across the southern Rockies. Still some model differences regarding the evolution of this system this weekend into the following week, but NBM low to medium (20%-40%) rain chances seem reasonable for now. In addition to the rain chances, cooler temperatures will return, with highs in the 70s from Sunday through the following Tuesday.
Aviation
(12Z TAFS) Issued at 620 AM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026
Some very patchy low clouds are trying to creep up the Rio Grande early this morning, and will continue a mention of some brief MVFR cigs in the southern terminals for a few hours this morning. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail. Light south to southeast winds will continue at 10 knots or less.
