Forecasters' discussion

Key Messages

- Seasonable temperatures trend around 5 degrees above normal during the latter half of this week into the weekend.

- Dry conditions will persist over the next 7 days with no precipitation.

Discussion

Issued at 1250 AM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026

An omega block will continue to provide tranquil weather conditions with seasonable temperatures as sfc high pressure remains in control over the Great Lakes region. While the ridge axis begins to shift more east from the Plains into the lower Ohio Valley during the latter half of the week, the only noteworthy change will be temperatures warming around 5 degrees above normal due to southerly return flow. Highs will range from the mid to upper 70s with lows struggling to dip below 50 degrees by the weekend. There are signs on some of the model guidance that a cold front will eventually impact the FA towards the middle of next week as a potent trough ejects across the northern Plains. For the foreseeable future, no precipitation is expected over the next 7 days that would provide relief from the abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

Aviation

Issued at 515 AM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026

High-level clouds will clear to the east today, giving way to mostly sunny skies. Winds will be out of the northeast around 4 kts, followed by calm tonight as the boundary layer quickly decouples after sunset. There is a 30% chance of patchy fog Wednesday morning, but confidence is not high enough to include mention at the terminals.
