Mapping the Sense of What’s Going On Inside
36+ min ago (1099+ words) Last year, Ardem Patapoutian got a tattoo. An artist drew a tangled ribbon on his right arm, the diagram of a protein called Piezo. Dr. Patapoutian, a neuroscientist at Scripps Research in San Diego discovered Piezo in 2010, and in 2021 he won a Nobel Prize for the work. Three years later, he decided to memorialize the protein in ink. Piezo, Dr. Patapoutian had found, allows nerve endings in the skin to sense pressure, helping to create the sense of touch. "It was surreal to feel the needle as it was etching the Piezo protein that I was using to feel it," he recalled. Dr. Patapoutian is no longer studying how Piezo informs us about the outside world. Instead, he has turned inward, to examine the flow of signals that travel from within the body to the brain. His research is part…...

This humanoid robot smashed a walking record, but we’d love to know more
2+ hour, 21+ min ago (634+ words) A humanoid robot has strolled into the record books after completing the longest-ever walk by such a machine. Built by Chinese robotics firm AgiBot, the A2s record-breaking trek covered 106.3 kilometers (66 miles) and took three days to complete, ending along Shanghais famous Bund waterfront promenade. Footage shows the full-size humanoid robot walking purposefully through urban areas, alongside national highways, and over bridges. Powered by AgiBots rapid hot-swap battery system, the A2 robot was able to walk continuously without taking a break. "Walking from Suzhou to Shanghai is a tough task even for many humans, but the robot achieved it," Wang Chuang, senior vice president of AgiBot, said in widely reported comments. Wang added: "It proves the maturity of the robots hardware, cerebellar balance algorithms, and endurance, laying a solid foundation for large-scale commercial deployment." While certainly an impressive feat, it would be good…...

Bihar street food vendor uses 'AI-powered' robotic machine to make dosas. Watch
4+ hour, 40+ min ago (260+ words) In the ever-evolving world of street food innovation, a video of a Bihar food vendor using a robotic arm to roll dosas with precision has grabbed the internet's attention. The video, originally shared on YouTube by food content creator Foodie Devesh, showcases a dosa-making process that looks almost futuristic. In the clip, a dosa is seen cooking on a hot griddle, fully spread and crisping to perfection. Just then, a robotic arm swings into action, scraping one edge of the dosa before rolling it up flawlessly in a single smooth motion, which is a task that typically requires skilled hands and years of practice. However, the machine doesn't stop there. The arm is also seen neatly spreading the batter on the hot surface for the next dosa while the vendor pours oil around the edges to help it crisp. Once…...
