State Lawmakers Call on Congress to Allow Local AI Regulations

20+ hour, 34+ min ago (239+ words) By Theodore Bunker "|" Monday, 24 November 2025 01:00 PM EST Hundreds of state legislators are calling on Congress not to include a proposed provision in the annual defense bill that would nullify state-level regulations on artificial intelligence. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told Punchbowl News earlier this month that House Republicans were looking to include language that would ban the enforcement of state AI laws in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2026. A bipartisan group of more than 200 state lawmakers wrote in an open letter to the House and Senate that this year's defense bill includes "a blanket prohibition on state and local AI and automated decision-system regulation."" The legislators argue that this "would abruptly cut off active democratic debate in statehouses and impose a sweeping pause on policymaking at the very moment when communities are seeking responsive solutions." The letter adds,…...

A Baker, a Pastor, and Charlotte’s Stand Against ICE

3+ day, 22+ hour ago (902+ words) It's these facts more than anything that account for "Charlotte's Web," CBP head Greg Bovino's gracelessly named operation that targeted the city. Bovino's playbook is by now as familiar as an old coat. In Charlotte, federal agents waited on popular highways and stopped people who simply looked Hispanic. Locals described to me the way ICE and CBP agents revved up to Home Depots and Compare supermarkets, and how they aggressively questioned people at construction sites and gas stations. Support our journalism and commentary'and read all our locked content'by becoming a Bulwark+ member today As in other cities, Charlotte has seen its share of American citizens subjected to forcible mistreatment during "Kavanaugh stops," where federal agents target them because of their race. It is blatant profiling. And it's exactly what happened to a man named Willy Aceituno. "They just ID'd him,…...

Mamdani Targets The Rich With New Tax On Anyone Who Makes More Than $0 A Year

4+ day, 18+ hour ago (299+ words) NEW YORK, NY " Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced plans on Thursday to specifically target the rich with a new tax on anyone who makes more than $0.00 a year. The plan, dubbed the "How Much You Got?" Tax, was expected to go into effect in January after Mamdani officially takes office. He has called the tax a day-one initiative, claiming his bread lines would be a disaster without the increased revenue from taking all of everyone's money. "Everything will be free because we'll use everyone's money to pay for it," Mamdani said. "It's basic economics. You wouldn't understand." Officially, Mamdani has no authority to raise taxes in the city (other than property taxes) without the cooperation of the New York State Legislature. However, experts believe he'll receive little pushback at the state level. "He kind of just does whatever he wants without…...

Spain to Investigate Meta Over Suspected Violation of User Privacy

5+ day, 21+ hour ago (129+ words) Spain's parliament will investigate Meta for possible privacy violations of its Facebook and Instagram users, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Nov. 19. "In Spain, the law is above any algorithm or any large technology platform. And anyone who violates our rights will pay the consequences," Sanchez said in a statement. The investigation stems from international research that found Meta had used a hidden mechanism to track the web activity of Android device users, Sanchez's office said. Meta said it would work with Spanish officials on the issue. "Meta takes privacy very seriously and provides a range of tools to help people control how their data is used. We look forward to engaging constructively with the authorities on this matter," a Meta spokesperson said in a text message....

Spain to investigate Meta over suspected violation of user privacy

6+ day, 3+ hour ago (159+ words) MADRID (Reuters) -Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday his government would investigate Facebook and Instagram owner Meta for possible violation of privacy of users of its social media applications. The probe stems from research carried out by several international research centres that found the company had used a hidden mechanism to track the web activity of Android device users, Sanchez's office said in a statement. "In Spain, the law is above any algorithm or any large technology platform," Sanchez said, according to the statement. "And anyone who violates our rights will pay the consequences." The government said Meta may have violated various European Union laws on security and privacy including its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the ePrivacy Directive, the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act. Meta will be called to testify before a lower house…...

Antitrust’s Iceberg Problem: Failing to See What Lies Beneath

1+ week, 4+ hour ago (790+ words) Antitrust enforcers can claim victories, but it is innovation that creates valuable change. The challenge for policymakers is not to fight battles that are already past, but to let the future happen faster. The post Antitrust's Iceberg Problem: Failing to See What Lies Beneath appeared first on American Enterprise Institute - AEI. Antitrust enforcement in the United States too often fails to deliver what it promises. The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission have won historic cases'the breakups of Standard Oil and AT&T, and most recently the ruling against Google's search practices'but such victories rarely enable commerce or bring benefits for consumers. The reason is simple: Antitrust enforcers are fighting the wrong battles. They focus on the moments they can easily see, such as present and past market shares, rather than on how industries evolve. By the time regulators finish…...

US Justice Department challenges California mask ban for federal officers

1+ week, 16+ hour ago (188+ words) WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday filed a lawsuit challenging California's ban on federal law enforcement officers wearing masks while on duty. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation in September prohibiting masking by local and federal law enforcement officers amid increased immigration enforcement efforts in the state. The Justice Department said it does not plan to comply with the state law as it violates the U.S. Constitution's intergovernmental immunity doctrine and poses new legal liabilities for federal officers. "Law enforcement officers thus face a real threat of criminal liability from state officials who have made clear their intent to target federal officers and disrupt federal law enforcement activities, including federal immigration enforcement," the department said in the lawsuit. Spokespeople for Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta did not immediately respond to requests for comments. The California law, the…...

New York governor considering raising corporate taxes, source says

1+ week, 3+ day ago (413+ words) (Reuters) -New York Governor Kathy Hochul is considering increasing corporate taxes to close a potential budget shortfall amid federal cuts, but that no decision has been made, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday. "The state is on strong financial footing today but much of the budget outcome at the start of next year is going to be largely dependent on what the federal government does and we're watching that closely and trying to plan accordingly," the source said. The source did not say what new tax rate was under consideration by Hochul. New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has advocated to increase the top corporate rate from 7.25% to 11.5%. The issue of affordability was at the center of Mamdani's campaign with him promising to freeze rent and raise taxes on the rich. A spokesperson for Mamdani's campaign did…...
