NYSUT expands Science of Reading program statewide after strong early success

2+ hour, 45+ min ago (316+ words) New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) has officially opened statewide enrollment for its Science of Reading program, following overwhelmingly positive feedback from educators who participated in the pilot phase. The free training, titled Science of Reading: A Practical Approach for Educators, was developed by teachers and literacy specialists through NYSUT's Education & Learning Trust and funded through the 202425 state budget as part of Governor Kathy Hochul's Back to Basics literacy initiative. The 30-hour course includes five interactive live sessions and five structured reflection modules, all designed to give educators a deeper understanding of the science behind how children learn to read " and how to apply those strategies with any curriculum in any classroom. "The science of reading is complex work. Our course gives educators the tools, modeling and confidence to put research into practice," said NYSUT Executive Vice President Jaime Ciffone....

Why Ohio is changing its recommendations for teaching math: The Wake Up for Monday, Nov. 24, 2025

19+ hour, 15+ min ago (1209+ words) When my kids get stuck on their math homework, I am of zero help. Not only because it's been decades since I used the algebra, geometry and calculus pounded into my brain. But also because how schools explain the concepts has changed drastically since I was a teenager. Ohio is again changing its recommendations for math education, in part to address pandemic learning loss. K-12 students' mathematics performance has declined over the past decade, according to the state. And a June report from the National Council on Teacher Quality rated Ohio "weak" on policies to strengthen elementary math instruction. Ohio is not putting the same kind of energy and resources into math that it has in its Science of Reading curriculum, but it has issued a 47-page plan with recommendations. The plan "recognizes that mathematics is an increasingly important factor in…...

New era of co-teaching

2+ day, 6+ hour ago (464+ words) Sunday, 23 Nov 2025 Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has announced that the co-teaching method, with two teachers managing a single classroom, will be introduced under the 2027 school curriculum to balance academic achievement and character development. This is an interesting development. When I retired from school leadership 20 years ago, co-teaching was not part of our educational vocabulary. Classrooms were singular spaces: one teacher, one group of students, and a daily rhythm shaped by the teacher's own planning, personality and perseverance. Teaching was, in many ways, a solitary craft " rewarding, yes, but often isolating. So, when I first heard about the growing practice of co-teaching, I was intrigued. Two teachers sharing responsibility for one class, planning together, instructing together, assessing together, would have sounded radical in my day. Yet, the more I read, observed and reflected, the more I realised it is a natural…...

Ohio unveils K-12 math plan with focus on quality textbooks, evidence-based instruction

2+ day, 19+ hour ago (871+ words) COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio education officials have unveiled a new statewide math plan aimed at reversing years of stagnant achievement and helping students recover from pandemic setbacks. The 47-page document, Ohio's Plan for K-12 Mathematics, urges schools to adopt highly rated instructional materials, embrace evidence-based teaching strategies, and invest in ongoing professional development for educators. Local districts are encouraged'not required'to study the plan and develop their own implementation strategies over the next three years. The math plan is notably less prescriptive than the state's "Science of Reading" law, which mandates specific literacy practices grounded in phonics. That program came with $164 million in state funding for new materials and teacher training. In contrast, the math plan is not tied to new legislation or dedicated dollars. Still, many educators say the plan's emphasis on collaboration and shared leadership is a solid foundation. "Any building…...

3 Powerful Advantages You Have When Changing Careers After 40 (Or 50)

2+ day, 22+ hour ago (404+ words) I've been trying to make a transition into some part of the great environmental-protection industry. One thing I'm anxious about is my age. I've taken my earliest jobs off my marketing materials, but if I get to the interview process they'll have my birthdate. What advice would you give to someone in this stage of a career trying to pivot, especially in a low-hire market? " Writer/ Researcher That said, there is a strong argument to be made that career change after 40 or 50 is not only doable but preferable. If you have made the most of your career to date, you have years or even decades of experience over your competition. When you have just a few jobs or projects, you're limited in the examples you share. This is not the case when you look over years and decades. That experience…...
