Community members voice opinions at FCPS Board meeting

4+ min ago (465+ words) LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Community members flooded the Fayette County School Board's monthly action meeting Monday night, voicing their concerns during public comment. Protesters gathered outside the Fayette County Public Schools administration building Monday evening ahead of the school board's meeting. The group chanted "save the stables" and called on the district to preserve its alternative school program at the Kentucky Horse Park. The district's new facility assessment committee could recommend the board cut the program to save money. "Rather than cutting back on their own expenditures for themselves, like extensive travel, they're now trying to cut from the most underprivileged in our communities," said Laura Webb, who lives in Lexington. The committee has not made a recommendation on the stables program yet, and the board would have to hold a vote before any recommendations could be acted upon. Kentucky United…...

Orange school board receives update on operating standards for gifted students

21+ min ago (990+ words) PEPPER PIKE, Ohio -- Rebecca Fredmonsky, coordinator of gifted services for the Orange City School District, provided an update on new operating standards in Ohio for gifted students to the Orange Board of Education. "While not many standard revisions have a large impact on our services here at Orange, some shifts had to be made in order to comply with our new operating standards," Fredmonsky told the board Monday (Nov. 24). Fredmonsky said the latest revisions to the operating standards for identifying and serving students who are gifted went into effect July 1. She noted that there were three major categories of changes: identification, services and professional development. In terms of identification, whole-grade screening -- a process in which a district tests all students in a specific grade to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to be identified for gifted programs -- no longer requires…...

Inside the Sydney school where the teachers change classrooms, not the students

24+ min ago (891+ words) Think back to when you were in high school. Do you remember scanning a key card through a turnstile to mark yourself present for the day? Or hiking up 10 flights of stairs to get to class? For students like me, that is just a normal school day. Arthur Phillip High School, Parramatta student Evelyn Tran is in year 10.Credit: James Brickwood When I first walked in to Arthur Phillip High School in the Parramatta CBD as a 12-year-old, the building felt overwhelming. The height, the layout and the flow of people between levels were all things I had to get used to. All of this may sound unusual for a high school " after all, those experiences are more like entering a modern office building. Arthur Phillip is NSW's first high-rise public high school, so that makes our schooling experience a…...

Many teachers taking second jobs to make ends meet

28+ min ago (640+ words) MARQUETTE " Many teachers in Michigan need to work additional jobs to make ends meet. The rising cost of health care is one major reason why teachers seek additional employment." Repaying student loans is an additional reason, said Doug Pratt, the director of communications and public engagement at the Michigan Education Association. "Getting a master's degree is another expense that a lot of educators have to deal with on their own to maintain their certification," Pratt said. The MEA is the state's largest union of teachers and other school support staff, like bus drivers and cafeteria workers." About 40% of the union's members say they need to take on a second job. Teachers and support staff seek out second jobs at similar rates, he said. Younger teachers are more likely than older ones to work second jobs. The average starting salary for…...

Can India’s schools keep up as technology rewrites the rules of learning?

33+ min ago (450+ words) Experts caution that without swift and purposeful reforms, these classrooms may struggle to meet the demands of a technology-led future. The challenge is not just adopting new tools but ensuring that the infrastructure, teacher training and curriculum are aligned with modern learning needs. As education systems worldwide accelerate, India must move quickly to ensure its students are not left behind. The government has outlined ambitious goals, including introducing artificial intelligence and computational thinking from Class 3 by 202627. Thousands of schools have already begun integrating AI modules. Yet ambition alone cannot bridge gaps in infrastructure, training and readiness. In well-resourced private schools, tablets and digital platforms can replace notebooks and rote-heavy lessons. But in many rural and remote schools where electricity is patchy, classrooms are shared across grades, and there are few devices that often sit unused. Without reliable power, connectivity or…...

First Amendment prevails over gender identity, pronoun guidance

41+ min ago (316+ words) An attorney says an Oregon school district is right to award two teachers $650,000 and recognize their right to criticize their school's gender identity policy. Grants Pass School District teachers Rachel Sager and Katie Medart were terminated in 2021 for participating in the "I Resolve" campaign against the school's policy of allowing males into women's bathrooms. The campaign sought to establish an alternative to the district's "Gender Identity, Transgender, Name, and Pronoun Guidance." "Rachel and Katie just advocated for solutions that they believed in," says Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorney Mathew Hoffmann. "They created a video on their own time to bring forward loving, reasonable, and tolerant solutions regarding gender identity and education, and they were terminated for that. And that violates the First Amendment." Sager, who was an assistant principal in the district, and Medart, who taught health and science, faced…...
