Forecasters' discussion
From the National Weather Service office in VEF, issued 2 hrs ago
Key Messages
* Quiet and seasonable weather conditions through at least Wednesday.
* Chances of precipitation and cooler temperatures return to the region late-week into the weekend.
Discussion
Today through Sunday.
Zonal flow aloft maintains quiet weather and mild temperatures through the first half of the week. Temperatures will be within a few degrees of normal for late October, which means highs in the upper 70s for Las Vegas, the mid 80s in the Colorado River Valley, and the upper 60s in Owens Valley. A series of shortwaves will pass through the northwestern United States over the next few days, bringing breezy southerly to southwesterly winds to the southern Great Basin on Monday, shifting to the Colorado River Valley and northwestern Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Attention turns to a longwave trough and associated shortwaves that will approach the west coast later this week. Southwesterly flow along the edge of the trough will advect anomalous moisture into the region, with PWATs upwards of 200 percent of normal for this time of year by Friday. Given it is late October, this translates to PWATs of around 0.80 inch or greater. The earliest precipitation chances are on Friday morning in northwestern Arizona and parts of southern Nevada with the initial, weaker shortwaves before spreading west over the weekend. Current ensemble guidance suggests that the main trough will move inland on Sunday, bringing an uptick in moisture and precipitation chances to much of the area. Precipitation amounts are highly dependent on the trajectory of the moisture and strength of the low and more specific details regarding the timing and location of impacts will become apparent throughout the week. Continue to check the forecast as Halloween weekend gets closer.
