Key Messages

Issued at 1145 PM CDT Sat Oct 24 2026

- Given the ongoing drought across the region, wildfires will remain of concern through the end of next week.

- The lack of appreciable rainfall and growing rainfall deficit will result in further drought degradation through the end of this month into early November.

- Scattered showers late next week into early next weekend could bring temporary relief to rain starved soils until widespread appreciable rainfall returns.

Discussion

Issued at 1121 PM CDT Sat Oct 24 2026

A stagnant dry pattern to persist across the region through the forecast period ending next Friday. An upper-level ridge across the ArkLaTex to again bring seasonably warm conditions on Sunday with highs in the lower to middle 80s. The upper-ridge is forecast to shift east of the region on Monday allowing for southwest flow to advect enough mid and upper-level moisture to generate mostly cloudy skies through Wednesday with skies improving thereafter as weak ridging across the Gulf of America rebuilds northward.

A surface high across the East will maintain light east-southeast winds through the period. The southerly component of the wind will be enough to slowly advect gulf moisture northward and raise dewpoint values from 40s on Sunday to near 60 degrees by the end of next week resulting in overnight lows gradually warming each day. Overnight lows from the mid 50s to lower 60s expected by the end of next week.

Higher dewpoints will also help to slightly improve the wildfire threat. However, significant improvement not expected until prolonged widespread rainfall returns which may still be a couple of weeks away. /05/

Aviation

(00Z TAFS) Issued at 1103 PM CDT Sat Oct 24 2026

For the 25/06Z TAFs, VFR conditions should prevail through this forecast period. Will be watching the possibility of low clouds developing and/or advancing northward in the vicinity of the LFK terminal near or shortly after sunrise. This would result in a very brief MVFR ceiling but decided to leave that out of the LFK terminal and will readdress with the 12z package. Otherwise cannot rule out a late afternoon cu field across our the western third of our airspace, otherwise look for increasing high thin cirrus that will increase in opacity later in the TAF period. Look for E to SE winds with speeds generally under 10kts from mid morning Sunday through the end of the TAF period.
