Discussion

Issued at 212 PM CDT Sat Oct 24 2026

18z/1pm surface analysis shows a sprawling ridge of high pressure from Quebec to the Gulf Coast. Meanwhile a 992mb low is tracking across northern Manitoba with its trailing cold front extending southward into the Plains. Despite high clouds streaming across the region from the northwest, partial sunshine has heated the dry airmass quite efficiently this afternoon...resulting in current temperatures in the lower to middle 70s. As has been the case for the past several days, readings will quickly drop after sunset...with overnight lows ranging from the lower to middle 40s in the Wabash River Valley to around 50 degrees along/west of the Illinois River.

The Manitoba low will continue to track eastward over the next 24 hours, gradually pulling the cold front southward toward Illinois. However as the boundary becomes parallel with the upper flow, it will lose its southward momentum and remain well W/NW of the KILX CWA. As a result, the stretch of very warm and dry weather will continue through the middle of next week as highs routinely climb into the middle to upper 70s while overnight lows drop into the upper 40s and lower 50s.

A second short-wave trough and its associated surface low traversing southern Canada will push another cold front southward toward the region by the end of the week. With all 12z Oct 24 models showing a slight weakening of the upper ridge, it appears this boundary will drop a bit further south than the first. With GFS precipitable water values edging up to 1.25-1.50 immediately along/ahead of the approaching front, have added 20 PoPs for showers to the forecast Thursday and Thursday night along/north of a Macomb to Minonk line. The front will gradually dissipate and/or lift back northward on Friday, resulting in a return to warm/dry conditions across the board.

Aviation

VFR conditions will prevail through the entire 18z TAF period. SCT-BKN mainly high clouds will stream across the sky, although a few passing clouds at around 12,000-15,000ft will be possible from time to time as well. Winds will be S/SE at less than 10kt.
