Key Messages

Issued at 1138 PM CDT Thu Oct 22 2026

- Slightly above average warmth and prolonged dry conditions will maintain an elevated wildfire risk throughout much of the 7-day forecast period.

- The lack of appreciable rainfall and growing rainfall deficit will result in further drought degradation through the end of this month.

- Longer range guidance just beyond the next 7 days suggests the potential for a more active pattern closer to Halloween into early November.

Discussion

Issued at 1125 PM CDT Thu Oct 22 2026

An upper-level ridge extending across Mexico into Texas to build east across the ArkLaTex through the early part of the weekend allowing for seasonably warmer afternoon high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s each day. At the surface, continental high pressure across the eastern CONUS to remain well established allowing for light east to northeast winds across the region during the daytime hours followed by near calm winds overnight. With a lack of low-level moisture, afternoon relative humidity values from 20 to 30 percent can be expected each day. Additionally, with dewpoint values in the upper 40s to lower 50s, similar overnight low temperatues will be possible each night due to the effects of radiational cooling.

The ongoing drought and persistent dry airmass in place will maintain an elevated wildfire threat across the region that will likely persist through the entire forecast period.

Afternoon high temperatures near seasonal norms in the mid to upper 70s expected early next week through midweek as the upper- level ridge shifts south into the Gulf of America and southwest flow becomes established aloft. Increased instability across the region could lead to increased cloud-cover on Monday into Tuesday as an upper-level weakness translates northeast across the region. However, with a lack of moisture, no precipitation is expected with this system. /05/

Aviation

(12Z TAFS) Issued at 535 AM CDT Fri Oct 23 2026

Quiet conditions once again on the aviation front with only increasing high thin cirrus thru the period. Look for east northeast to east southeast winds generally under 10kts thru the period as well. VFR conditions will prevail thru the next 24 hours.
